Backpacking Gear Hiking

Essential Camping/Hiking Gear?

I’m dating a girl who is REALLY in to camping and hiking. Since the last time I really did any of that was in Cub Scouts, it’s safe to say I don’t know anything. I don’t want to look like an idiot even though I have already told her that i’m a complete rookie. I wanted to know if there was anyone out there that’s big into camping and could give me a little help here. A list of types of clothing, how much should I bring, backpacks, sleeping bags, hiking boots, etc. would be very appreciated. Also, what are the best or most for your money brands out there?

Thanks!!!

Be the first to admit to her you don’t know anything at all. Posers in the wilderness are a liability. With that in mind start researching. Go to a reputable supplier like REI. These places are staffed with people that generally know what their doing and will outfit you with the right gear for the right trip. As you learn more you will be able to choose gear that is still appropriate but more into your affordability. If your into the outdoors at all like running, hiking etc. a lot of the clothing you have now will suffice just stay away from cotton fabrics since these retain water and in cold weather will not be the best choice right now.

learn to dress in layers,

Choose shoes/boots that are appropriate for the terrain and break them in before you take a long hike,

http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/breaking+in+hiking+boots.html

When camping with a partner pick a sleeping arrangement with her and you in mind that is also warm enough for the season,

As a beginner don’t overload yourself to much with gear you don’t need. Learn to pack right and light and pick a pack that fits you well.

Brand names are not as important at this time for you. You need to get quality gear. Some brand names, Coleman, for example do not apply to being the “best” in everything some they are for example like tents stove and lanterns, but others like sleeping bags and packs, they are not. That’s why you need to go to a reputable supplier where they will assist you in getting the “Best” gear in each category to fit you and your budget.

LIGHT FROM A THOUSAND CAMPFIRES represents the distillation of 35 years of hiking, backpacking and camping experience into a form that is intended to benefit both the beginning and seasoned outdoor enthusiast. Text, illustrations and photographs lay out the basic principles of hiking and camping and tell you what to look for in outdoor clothing and equipment. Ten anecdotes summarizing personal experiences highlight the subject areas. The discussion of outdoor skills provides an introduction to the basics – how to prepare for, plan and organize an outdoor trip and how to get there by foot, car, pack animal or boat. The discussion is supplemented by evaluations of how you can sharpen your hiking, backpacking and camping skills to become better and more efficient outdoorsmen. Special topics include the physiology of hiking, outdoor navigation, respecting nature, reading the weather and basic First Aid. The discussion of clothing and equipment focuses on construction and function, allowing you to understand how outdoor gear performs in the field, and therefore, how you can make informed decisions about selecting the best gear to suit your needs. By drawing on the experiences gained from many trips and trails, the "light" from all those campfires, the authors share their essential secrets of efficient, enjoyable hiking and outdoor living. In so doing, the book is intended to inform, entertain and increase your enjoyment of the great outdoors.

Hiking

Hiking is an outdoor activity which consists of walking in natural environments, often on hiking trails. It is such a popular activity that there are numerous hiking organizations worldwide. The health benefits of different types of hiking have been confirmed in studies. The word hiking is understood in all Englishspeaking countries, but there are differences in usage. In the United States and United Kingdom, hiking refers to crosscountry walking of a longer duration than a simple walk and usually over terrain where hiking boots are required. A day hike refers to a hike that can be completed in a single day, often applied to mountain hikes to a lake or summit, but not requiring an overnight camp, in which case the term backpacking is used. Bushwhacking specifically refers to difficult walking through dense forest, undergrowth, or bushes, where forward progress requires pushing vegetation aside. Monsters in the Woods: Backpacking with Children

Monsters in the Woods: Backpacking with Children

$18.08

Despite America’s enthusiasm for outdoors activities like hiking and backpacking, most books on these subjects focus on adults. Backpacking, however, is an ideal activity for the entire family. Tim Hauserman, who is both an experienced outdoors guide and the father of two daughters, now offers a handbook for parents who would like to introduce their children to backpacking and camping. Hauserman provides practical, humorous advice for families new to the outdoors and for trail-savvy parents planning to take their children along for the first time: how to prepare, what to bring, who carries what, how far to walk, what to do in camp, safety precautions, dealing with mishaps, and proper trail and campground etiquette. He includes guidance about appropriate distances and pack weights for every age level of child, as well as tips about backpacking with an infant and bringing the family dog along on the adventure. He even suggests appealing destinations in the Sierra Nevada appropriate for various age groups and recounts some of his (and his daughters’) favorite hikes. Hauserman’s down-to-earth encouragement is based on decades of backpacking and camping with his own children, their friends, and other groups of youngsters. He is candid about his experiences and the lessons he learned from his own mistakes and how he dealt with them. Ultimately, the reward of sharing a special adventure and the peace and beauty of the outdoors makes all the effort worthwhile.

Babes in the Woods: Hiking, Camping, Boating with Babies & Young Children

Babes in the Woods: Hiking, Camping, Boating with Babies & Young Children

$8.46

Inspire families to have safe and happy wilderness adventures! • Addresses the ongoing “last child in the woods” concern • Offers a fresh, modern approach to hiking and camping with kids • Makes parenting a celebration of the outdoors and a sharing of traditions There’s a lot of information out there about introducing school-age kids to the outdoors, but what about babies and toddlers? Author Jennifer Aist bridges that gap and shares her tried and tested advice for active new parents. Babes in the Woods introduces outdoorsy moms and dads to the joy and vigor of taking babies and toddlers into the woods at a very early age. Well-organized chapters offer functional solutions for appropriate gear, clothing, and food, nature games to play, and tips on potty breaks and sleeping outdoors—but most importantly, Aist explores all the reasons why introducing even the youngest of children to wilderness experiences is healthy, rewarding, and fun. Whether planning a short day hike, a car camping trip, a base camp adventure, or a backpacking excursion, Aist covers every season and climate, while confirming that babies are well-suited for the mountains, the water, and the adventures that lie beyond. JENNIFER AIST is founder and director of Providence Alaska Medical Center’s parenting and childbirth education program, Parenting with Providence. She teaches classes on everything from breastfeeding to backpacking and conducts her signature “Babes in the Woods,” “Babes in the Snow,” and “Babes on the Water” classes every year. She has also consulted with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game on a preschool outdoor education curriculum. A graduate of theUniversity of California, Davis, she lives in Anchorage, Alaska, with her husband and four children.
